Holly Dunn reached into the storage chest. Large, with fleur-de-lis adornments, it held mementos from her past—including several duplicate wedding photos. She pulled out an eight by ten and studied the black and white portrait featuring her in profile, smiling lovingly, hopefully, at her groom. Paul stared at the camera straight on, his expression bold and confident. Confident of what? Holly wondered fleetingly. Confident the marriage would last?
“Give it to me,” her best friend Mary said, interrupting her thoughts.
She shook her head, wincing uncertainly. “I really don’t know about this…”
“Trust me. What we’re about to do is good for the soul. Give me the photo.”
She passed her friend the portrait, which she promptly ripped in two, severing Holly’s smiling face from Paul’s. In response to her horrified gasp, Mary said, “It’s just a piece of paper—meaningless, like Paul’s promises. Hold onto that thought.”
“Yes, you’re right. I’ll do it,” she said, surprised at her own audacity.
